SWINDON'S early season fixtures continue to be hampered by inclement weather and Thursday’s encounter against Ipswich saw just ten heats of the scheduled fifteen completed.
In an eventful meeting, rain began to fall prior to race eleven and a first corner crash in that heat proved to be the final speedway of the evening.
Prior to the action, a minute's silence was impeccably observed in memory of club legend Paul Fry, who regrettably passed away on Wednesday evening.
On-track, Morten Risager was the only Robins’ rider to complete his programmed schedule. The Dane was certainly in good form and notched an impressive 9-point haul, whilst Simon Stead conjured a well deserved paid 8 from his three rides.
Elsewhere, Grzegorz Zengota contributed an eye-catching performance and the exciting Pole notched two race wins.
Ipswich were well served by their Danish second-string Claus Vissing, whilst Scott Nicholls mustered paid 5 from his two rides. Perhaps the most prominent visiting rider was Swedish youngster Linus Sundstrom whose paid 5 score was tenaciously acquired.
Swindon led from heat two onwards with successive 5-1 advantages in races ten and eleven propelling Ronnie Russell’s septet into a commanding 15 point lead.
Ipswich nominated Scott Nicholls for a tactical ride in the eleventh but the initial staging of the heat was stopped due to a collision between Mads Korneliussen and Claus Vissing. With persistent rain now falling and the race-surface becomingly increasingly dangerous, the re-staging of the race wasn’t able to commence and a decision was made to abandon the meeting.
Swindon will be hoping for some improved weather when they travel to Ipswich on Friday (2 April) for the return leg of the encounter.
