NOTE: Under the league scoring system, Swindon gained 3 points and Ipswich received 0.
SWINDON displayed great tenacity to battle back from a hefty twelve-point deficit and eventually notch victory at Ipswich’s re-vamped Foxhall Heath raceway.
The Robins started slowly and conceded heat advantages in the opening three races. However, a well worked 8-1 tactical contribution from Mads Korneliussen and Grzegorz Zengota in the seventh transformed the riding of Ronnie Russell’s septet.
Indeed, the maximum heat seven return galvanized the Swindon side who performed significantly stronger in the latter stages of the encounter.
A heat twelve 5-1 from the exciting pairing of Mads Korneliussen and Thomas H. Jonasson narrowed Ipswich’s lead to just a solitary point.
A 3-3 return ensued in a hotly anticipated race thirteen, before a 5-1 from Mads Korneliussen and Thomas H. Jonasson in the penultimate race handed Swindon a one-point lead heading into the fifteenth.
A hugely tense final race ensued which saw the Robins claim the 3-3 they required to seal overall victory much to the delight of the Swindon camp.
A terrific paid fourteen point haul from popular Dane Mads Korneliussen headed the Robins’ score-card. His hefty contribution was integral to Swindon’s eventual success and the long-serving Robin displayed bundles of determination throughout.
Indeed, Korneliussen was deservedly handed a berth in heat fifteen by team boss Ronnie Russell and rode with great composure to keep a hard-charging Daniel King at bay. The Dane’s eventual third place finish ensured Swindon’s slender overall victory.
Korneliussen received strong support from club captain Leigh Adams who amassed a paid eleven point score, whilst Thomas H. Jonasson acquired an eye-catching eight. Simon Stead weighed in with a decent paid eight from the No.5 spot, whilst Morten Risager recovered from a slow start to card paid five.
Grzegorz Zengota also submitted a positive performance, whilst club No.8 Justin Sedgmen notched a solitary point from his three ride schedule.
Ipswich were well served by British International Scott Nicholls whose excellent paid fourteen point score saw him beaten just once by a Robins’ rider. Nicholls received decent back-up from Daniel King and Olly Allen but Swindon were able to effectively exploit the weaknesses of the Witches’ lower order.
Swindon team-manager Ronnie Russell said:
“I’m delighted to have collected three Elite league points, I’m pleased with the way the lads performed – certainly in the latter part of the meeting.
In recent away meetings we’ve been making excellent progress in the early stages but let our concentration slip towards the end. Unbelievably, the victory against Ipswich was completely vice versa and we concluded the meeting in emphatic style.
The Swindon team has once again shown what they are capable of, we must now aim to carry this momentum into our upcoming fixturesâ€
