SWINDON were edged out 49-41 by play-off chasers Belle Vue in a thrilling encounter at the Abbey Stadium.

The meeting went all the way to a last-heat decider, but it was the Aces who came out victorious after staging a late finale to snatch the Elite League points

There was never more than four-points between the two teams prior to the last race and the final scoreline doesn’t really reflect how tight things were.

With the scores tided at 15-15 the visitors got their noses in front with a 4-2 in Heat 6, but the Robins soon levelled things up in race 8 and then Scott Nicholls team-rode debutant Kenny Ingalls to a 5-1 in Heat 10.

This put Swindon 32-28 ahead but the whole match appeared to change following a dramatic Heat 13.

The Belle Vue pair of Rory Schlein and Chris Harris were first away from the tapes but Nicholls gave chase and put Harris under extreme pressure. The two British rivals passed and re-passed, but it was Nicholls who lost out as he eventually crashed and was disqualified.

In the re-start the Aces duo just got the better of Nicolai Klindt with the ensuing 5-1 levelling things up at 33-33 with just two races to go.

Patrick Hougaard and Ricky Kling then beat Robins’ injury returnee Simon Stead to a 5-1 in the penultimate race, meaning Nicholls and Klindt needed a maximum from the final race to snatch a draw.

But there was to be no last-race heroics from the home pair as Harris and Schlein repeated the result of Heat 13, leaving the Robins with nothing to show from what was an entertaining night’s action.

SWINDON 41: Nikolai Klindt 8, Scott Nicholls 7, Jesper B Monberg 6+1, Cory Gathercole 6+1, Simon Stead 6+1, Josh Grajczonek 6, Kenny Ingalls 2+1

BELLE VUE 49: Chris Harris 14, Rory Schlein 11+3, Patrick Hougaard 9, Ricky Kling 8+2, Charlie Gjedde 4+1, David Stachyra 2+1, Kozza Smith 1
