IT is with great sadness that we report the death of Swindon's former Finnish ace Ari Koponen at the age of 58.

Ari rode for Swindon in 1984/85 and was a very consistent scorer and reliable second string rider for the Robins.

He averaged 6.15 in 1984, recording one full and one paid maximum, and tabled a 5.02 average in 1985 before leaving British speedway.

Ari reached the World Under 21 Final on two occasions (1979, 1980) and was crowned the Finnish Champion once in 1983.
