EVERYONE at Swindon Speedway is saddened to hear of the passing of the club’s former team manager Ron Byford.
Ron passed away peacefully this morning (Friday February 7) at home with his family by his side after a long period of ill health.
A Legends Lounge regular in recent times, Ron will be remembered most for managing the Robins, joining the club in 1987.
Ron was lucky to have a wealth of talent at that time with club greats Brian Karger, Peter Nahlin, Jimmy Nilsen, John Davis and current manager Alun Rossiter all in his team.
Ron was also instrumental in bringing showman and entertainer Andrew Silver to the Robins during his tenure.
"Ron has been in my life for as long as I can remember,†said club co-promoter Lee Kilby.
"I remember him as team manager down at Exeter when I would travel down with Dad (Bob Kilby, former rider) to watch the Falcons, and then he came to Swindon in the mid 80s.
“Pictures emerged a few years back of Ron involved in parts of dad's testimonial back in 1980 that I would have been at.
“Ron was a genuinely lovely man who everybody liked. John Davis said he was the best team manager he ever rode for, which is some statement from JD who raced at the highest level.
"Alun Rossiter and I visited Ron numerous times in hospital over the last few weeks and even though he was clearly very unwell, we managed to get him having a laugh or two which was really nice to see.
"He was a great man and I know I speak on behalf of everyone when I say he will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered. Rest in peace Ron.â€
Swindon Speedway offer our sincere and heartfelt condolences to Ron’s family at this sad time.
