ROWE’S IMPRESSIVE START

Saturday March 14, 2020
FORMER British Champion Danny King clinched victory in the Ben Fund Bonanza at Scunthorpe on Saturday.

King, 33, showed his class scoring 13 points from his five qualifying heats which meant he went straight into the final having only dropped two points to Aaron Summers and Josh Auty.

Having notched up back-to-back wins going into the final, the Brit had hit top form at the perfect time, but victory would be no easy task as he came up against new Belle Vue skipper Steve Worrall - who put in a solid performance scoring 12.

Elsewhere, former Scunthorpe rider Lewis Kerr showed his gating ability with three wins from his five rides which secured his place in the final alongside his fellow countryman King and Worrall.

While Scorpions’ favourite Auty, delighted the home crowd by securing his place in the Final after defeating James Wright, Thomas Jorgensen and Summers in the one-off semi-final.

In the Final, Kerr made the gate only to throw a chain going into the first turn which opened the door for King - who held off a strong challenge from Worrall and Auty to secure victory.

King said: “No matter what you ride in the winter you always think you’re fast, but you can’t compare it until you go from the tapes with three other guys. It was great fun to be able to do it today and particularly for such a great thing like the Ben Fund.

“We were able to raise some money for the Ben Fund which is exactly why we do meetings like this and it is great to see lot of supporters still turned up despite the current situation in the UK and aboard.

“We as riders will continue to always do our bit for the Benevolent Fund because without this there are some riders who wouldn’t be able to get through it and they get my full support that’s for sure.”
