DOYLE WINS CRAVEN TRIPLE CROWN

Thursday October 22, 2020
SWINDON skipper Jason Doyle made the perfect end to the 2020 season by winning the Peter Craven Memorial Trophy at Belle Vue.

Doyle, a late entry into the meeting after talks with Aces and Australia boss Mark Lemon, achieved the notable feat of a hat-trick of victories in the event at the National Speedway Stadium.

And it matched his recent achievement in winning a third Czech Golden Helmet in Pardubice, a meeting which also went down to a six-rider Grand Final.

Doyle was the class of the field in the qualifiers with 14 points from five rides, missing out only to fellow countryman Brady Kurtz in Heat 12.

But there was plenty of frantic racing along the way as Doyle won a classic battle with his CFS Filtration Robins team-mate Troy Batchelor in Heat 8, having opened his account by slicing between Steve Worrall and Richard Lawson in the first race of the night.

A clear win in Heat 16 put Doyle in pole position to go straight to the Final, and he secured top place in the qualifiers with a sensational ride in Heat 20 to come from fourth to first.

With a crowded start-line for the six-man Final, Doyle selected the inside gate and made no mistakes whilst a frantic battle for the minor places ensued, with home duo Dan Bewley and Kurtz eventually coming through to complete the rostrum places.

Doyle said: “It’s a great way to finish the season and to win three Peter Cravens on the bounce is amazing.

“I think when Lemo went to Pardubice with the Under-21s he got a bit excited and decided to have a six-man Final, and around Belle Vue the corners are very big but it’s very narrow up the straights!

“But we all came away without an injury, and the main thing is we got a meeting on in England. It’s been a tough year for everyone, but hats off and congratulations to Belle Vue Speedway who put all this effort in to get a couple of meetings on.”

Batchelor, meanwhile, was out of luck after a difficult season in Poland and ended the meeting with four points from his five rides.
